The aging Fashion Valley Center was transformed into as a "garden cityscape" that captures the essence of the city's climate and the quality of its natural environment. A continuous motif of trellises, awnings and canopies and a common palette of indigenous materials such as stone, plaster, and ceramic tile reinforces the garden atmosphere. To make the shopping experience more relaxing, the rigidity of the original linear plan was replaced with smaller shopping precincts surrounded by gardens and abstract forms. Also provided in the expansion are 1,000 structured parking spaces, and linkage to the MTDB, San Diego's impressive light rail system.
