The California NanoSystems Institute Laboratory contains a variety of innovative spaces that support collaborative, cutting-edge research, as well as a cafe and a parking garage. The Institute and the parking structure face each other across a courtyard that symbolizes the shared nature of research and creates a place for community. A colonnade wraps around the courtyard, joining the two volumes. The facades have limestone and concrete surfaces, and one of them doubles as a projection screen.
